Driving in Alberta I don't come across nearly as many corners as I used to in BC. It's funny how you just learn to adapt to where you live. As I drove more in BC I started to learn tips and techniques that I think have helped me be a better driver overall. Here's a couple that have come to mind lately:
1. Give it some gas going into the curve. My natural inclination as I drive on the straight prairie roads of Alberta is to freak out when I see a curve coming along. That is the worst thing to do... freak out and slam on the breaks. Yes it's wise to do a bit of braking before the turn but then once you're in it give it some gas and really lean into the turn. It will make it go so much smoother. You've got way more steering ability when you're giving it gas than you do when you're stepping on the brakes.
2. Don't fixate on where you're afraid you'll go... focus on where you truly want to go. Have you ever heard the old adage, what I fear I create? That is a sad but true reality. If you're worried about driving into the ditch and you keep looking at the ditch... chances are you'll end up in the ditch. But if you look through the curve to where the road straightens out again you'll automatically steer yourself towards that. It's amazing how much more peaceful it feels to focus on where you want to go rather than where you don't.
Yes I was a driving instructor in my past... and I do love helping people learn how to drive confidently... but I also love helping people live confidently... especially through change.
When you see a bend in your road come up in life, like money is not coming in, or a relationship has changed or an illness or injury has sprung up, remember these driving tips.
Keep moving at a comfortable pace. If you freeze it probably won't help the situation. A moving ship is easier to steer. Also let go of the fears that are highlighting all the things that could go wrong. Focus on where you want to go and the truth of who you are in your situation.
Enjoy the journey!
